Origins and constitution

The IEI was founded on the 25th of March 1942 with Mr. Josep Mª Porcioles as the president of the Diputació of Lleida.

The Former Hospital Santa Maria, was the Museum of Art of Lleida until 1935; it included the sculptures from the Former Archaeological Museum of the Diocesan Seminary of Lleida and the paintings from the Morera Museum. When the Spanish Civil War broke out, in 1936, the building became the Village Museum, managed by the Culture Comissary of the Generalitat of Catalonia at Lleida and was used as a storehouse where all the materials confiscated by the Generalitat were stored. Later on, on the 27th of March 1938, this storehouse was taken over by the SDPAN (Service of Defence of the National Art Heritage).

In 1941, the representative of the SDPAN at Lleida was J.A. Tarragó Pleyan; he was also the person elected by the Diputació of Lleida to take possession of the building of the Former Hospital Santa Maria and of all its contents. On the 14th of February 1941, J.A. Tarragó Pleyan presented a report about the installation of an historical record office as one of the possible bodies of the future Centro de Estudios Leridanos. The negotiations in order to form the centre happened very quickly.

The creation of the "Instituto de Estudios Ilerdenses" finished with the meeting of the Committee of Management on the 25th of March 1942. In the institutional life of the IEI we can distinguish two periods: the first period, from its creation on 1942 to 1986; the second period, from 1986 to this year.
